Haiti and Walmart

I would have posted this a couple days ago when it first happened, but I wasn't really thinking about it at the time.

This is about two things.

First things first, it's what everybody's talking about: Haiti.

I'm not really sure what to say, except that earthquakes happen all the time, and I do know that this one happened to be the worst.

What confuses me is that why a lot of people are obsessing over it.

Okay, sure, everyone obsessed about Hurricane Katrina and the Tsunami. But there was a pretty bad natural disaster in Taiwan in the Summertime, and I didn't hear anything about it until I saw someone on my watch list posting a journal about it, and as I far as I knew, only a few people/small companies were doing donations for it.

Now suddenly there's a major earthquake in Haiti, a full-out slum (as one of my bros put it), and everyone jumps on it and starts gathering donations.

I'm not trying to be a heartless person, I'm just a little confused and I'm wondering if it's just me. Help me understand the situation a bit more so I have a clearer view on it.

Second thing: Some of us love it, others hate it - Walmart.

I know, you're probably thinking, "lolwat?" or something like that, but this is something that's been bugging me.

I don't really like Walmart all that much. To me, their prices seem suspiciously low and all of their commercials are narrated by women that sound like they're young and happy housewives who have the perfect family. Oh, and they sell way too much Hannah Montana stuff.

Recently, a costumer entered a Walmart probably thinking he was the coolest guy in town. He grabbed a clipboard from the greeter, the metal part cutting his hand, and the guy tried to walk away with it. The greeter tries to get the clipboard back, and the costumer punches him. So, the greeter punches back out of self defense, and this breaks out into a fight.

The next day, they suspend him. And during his suspension, he gets a call telling him he's fired from his job.

I'm sorry, what?

A guy who's probably the same age as my dad gets fired from his job at Walmart because he was defending himself and possibly other costumers?

If that's not really stupid, then I have no idea what is.

Sorry to those who like shopping at Walmart. You'll probably hate me forever for saying this. but:

I think we should try to boycott Walmart.

I'll admit, sometimes when me and my brothers and my dad go to Ohio to the marina in the summer, we shop at the nearest grocery store (which happens to be a Walmart) for some supplies, but firing an employee for defending himself is really stupid. There's another supermarket at the marina that we can shop at, anyways.

Maybe boycotting them will work, and maybe it won't. But I for one, think it's a good idea until they offer that employee his job back.

  1. I think it's because Taiwan is on the other side of the world. And really? Screw the Walmart people. I never go there anyways.
