My Rozen Maiden Fanfic - Preface, Prologue, and Chapter One

~Untitled (Lemme know if you guys have a good title idea for it)~

~Preface~

Time. At the moment time wasn’t exactly something I really had. If I didn’t make that doll back off in the next five seconds, I’d lose the only friend I’d ever have.
“SOUGINTOU!”

~Prologue~

Being alone isn’t always a good thing. I hate it. Spending day after day, night after night all by yourself with the people around you being selfish, ignorant, and completely unaware of the fact you exist. They are so fed up with the fact that you’re alive that one day, those people decide to leave you alone in a huge house with only the nanny to keep you company and pay the bills and feed you. And soon enough the nanny receives a call from those people that they’re never coming back and they give her full custody of you and the house. Good thing the nanny’s job makes just as much money as their jobs or else… well, you’d rather not think about it. Anyways, now the nanny’s your adopted mother.
Yeah, that’s pretty much my story.
My Adopted Mom - who prefers I called her by her first name, Nanami - isn’t all that bad, I guess. She just doesn’t say much because she’s worried that she’ll upset me. I’m not sure why she could possibly upset me, though. In fact she’s the only person who talks to me at all. In fact I wish she’d talk to me more for that reason, whether it’s upsetting or not.
All I really want is a friend…

~Chapter One~

“Abby-chan!” Nanami called up to me from the stairs, a hint of surprise in her tone. “There’s a letter for you!”
What? I ran to the top of the steps to make sure I heard her correctly. “A letter?” But I don’t know anybody…
“Yes. It’s a letter for you. I’m, uhm, not sure who sent it.” She handed it to me. “There’s no… writing in the corner.”
“Return address,” I told her. She knew English, but still had trouble here and there. She’s never told me how she learned it, though.
“Yes, no return address.” She bowed slightly. “Thank you for correcting me. Do you need anything?”
“No, that’s okay.” As soon as I finished, she started to walk back to the living room. “Nanami?”
“Yes?”
“I can make some Orzo to go with dinner tonight…”
“Orzo?”
“Oh, uhm, they’re rice-shaped buttered noodles.”
She turned around and smiled at me softly and said “Okay,” before closing the door to the living room.
I sighed quietly and opened the envelope on the way back to my room. But when I sat in my desk chair, I was baffled. In elegantly written handwriting were the words Wind or Don’t Wind? and then below in typed manuscript were instructions that told me to circle one and then put it in my second from the top desk drawer.
I grabbed a pen and circled Wind and did as the instructions told me to.
I waited for a few minutes in silence before turning on my stereo. “Kill All Your Friends” started to play through the speakers. After about ten seconds I sighed and stood up, giving up on waiting. But as I turned around, a beautifully decorated box sat in the middle of my bedroom floor.
“How’d this get here?” I asked no one in particular as I ran a finger along the edges of the box. I fingered the lock on it when it suddenly popped open a tiny bit, startling me.
Should I really open it? Slowly I lifted the lid, peering inside.
A doll was lying there, curled up somewhat with a wind-up key near its head. But then again, I shouldn’t say “it” because the doll looked so real I could say “she”. Her blond hair was styled into loose curls that sort of widened near the bottom. She wore white stockings, red ballet shoes, and what looked like a Sweet Lolita style dress, all topped off with a big pink bow on her head.
I lifted her up out of her box, shocked by how soft and warm she felt, and how big she was. I picked up the wind-up key and turned her over to find a small hole in her back. “I really shouldn’t… I don’t even know where this doll came from…” I played with the key in my hand a bit. “Although… Other than Nanami, she’s probably going to be the closest thing to a friend I’ll ever get.” After a few more seconds of looking between the doll and the key I sighed and wound her up, setting the key back in the box when I was done.
About two seconds went by before she suddenly moved. I squeaked and dropped her, watching as she twitched and shook, slowly sitting up. Her eyes stayed closed, but her face scrunched up and she lifted one of her arms and rubbed the back of her head.
“Ow… ow, ow, ow.” Her voice was tiny, but very cute sounding. “That hurt!” She opened her eyes, a pair of emerald green irises perfectly mimicking mine.
I suddenly embraced her tightly, squealing with delight. “OH MY GOD YOU’RE SO CUTE!” I loosened my hug and smiled at her. “Wow, you’re so lifelike! What’s you’re name?”
She smiled brightly. “I am Hina Ichigo, sixth doll of the Rozen Maiden. What’s your name?”
“I’m Abby,” I blushed at how I have no title to go with my name, but I hid it by hugging her again. “I CAN’T RESIST HUGGING YOU!”
I felt her little doll arms wrap around my neck lightly. “If you want, we can always be together!”
I pulled away a little, her tiny hands now on my shoulders. “I would love that. But, normally there’s a catch to these things, right?”
“You have to swear by my Roza Mystica-” she held out her left hand, showing me a silver ring with a rose on it “-and promise that we can always be with each other.”
“You’re sure that’s all there is to it?” I tilted my head and gently held her tiny hand. She nodded her head, and I sighed. “All right, then.” I leaned forward and kissed the rose on her finger. When I pulled back, my ring finger felt hot, and a ring that matched Hina’s appeared on my finger.
“Come on, Abby.” She smiled and squirmed out of my hold. “I wanna explore your house.”
